Ewald Bonzet

Ewald Bonzet broke the South African record for 10 000m at the age of 20, as a Cape Technikon Student (now CPUT), on the 23rd of November 1972, when he clocked a time of 28min51.6sec on a sandy Green Point Stadium at the Hunters athletics meeting.

With this effort he also became the first South African athlete to break the 29min barrier for the 10 000m on the track. Ewald went on to break 11 South African records in his career. He was the first South African to run 10, sub 4 minutes, for the 1 mile. His 5000m Western Province track record still stands today and he is still rated as the most versatile athlete in South Africa, having being awarded national colours for road, track and cross country. He won 10 national titles and is only one of only five athletes in the world to have run a sub-four-minute mile and a sub-2:13 marathon
